Irritable bowel syndrome is a common, chronic gastrointestinal disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. The exact cause is unknown, but stress, diet and a disturbed intestinal flora play a role. Irritable bowel syndrome is not life-threatening, but can significantly affect the quality of life.

For people with irritable bowel syndrome, a distinction is made between carbohydrates that are easily and poorly absorbed. The poorly absorbed carbohydrates are called FODMAPs, which is short for “Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Monosaccharides and Polyols”. FODMAPs are difficult to absorb in the small intestine, which means they are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine. This leads to gas formation and water retention, which can cause symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

There is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but there are measures to alleviate the symptoms. These include a low-FODMAP diet, stress reduction, regular exercise, adequate sleep, probiotics, and the digestive enzyme from FODZYME, which replaces the enzyme missing in people with irritable bowel syndrome that is necessary for the absorption of FODMAPs. FODZYME enables their absorption in the small intestine, as is the case with people without irritable bowel syndrome. This prevents FODMAPs from fermenting in the large intestine, reducing gas formation and water retention, which can significantly relieve or even eliminate symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Medications can also sometimes help alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

A low-FODMAP diet (also called a low FODMAP diet) is a diet in which difficult-to-absorb carbohydrates, the so-called FODMAPs, are avoided in order to reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It works in three phases:

Elimination phase: Avoidance of all foods containing FODMAPs for approximately 4-6 weeks, with the aim of achieving a significant reduction in symptoms.

Reintroduction phase: Gradual and controlled introduction of FODMAPs to find out which and how many are individually tolerated.

Maintenance phase: Long-term adjustment of diet based on individual tolerances to control symptoms in the long term.

FODCORNER offers a wide selection of low FODMAP foods from around the world that are laboratory tested and certified to meet the requirements of a low FODMAP diet. This makes it easier for those affected to follow this diet to reduce symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Our range includes FODZYME digestive enzymes, garlic and onion substitute powder, bouillon, spices, sauces and much more.
