Monash FODMAP App: Cost, Languages and Features

Monash University in Melbourne developed the FODMAP diet and still measures the FODMAP content of foods in its own laboratory. Its app is the reference guide to this data: for hundreds of foods, it shows the portion size at which they become high FODMAP.
Key points
- The app is a one-off purchase: about CHF 7 in Switzerland and under 10 euros in the eurozone. There is no subscription.
- It is available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian and Japanese.
- It runs on iPhone and iPad from iOS 17 and on Android from version 9.
- New test results are added automatically and at no extra cost.
- There is no free version.
What the app does
Hundreds of foods, each rated for a typical portion and for smaller or larger amounts.
You can see which FODMAPs a food contains, for example mannitol in celery.
After reintroduction, you can hide the groups you tolerate well. The traffic lights then adjust.
A list of branded products that Monash has certified as low FODMAP.
More than 70 recipes for low FODMAP cooking.
Log your food, symptoms, bowel movements and stress. The diary also guides you through reintroduction.
Add foods straight to your shopping list and save your own notes.
Explanations of the three-step FODMAP diet and of how to use the app.
How the traffic lights work
Each food has a large traffic light for the typical portion. Below it, smaller traffic lights show how the rating changes for other amounts. All portion sizes are per meal. Monash uses avocado to explain the system:
Low FODMAP in this amount.
Moderate FODMAP content.
High FODMAP in this amount.
So what matters is not the food itself, but the amount. During the elimination phase you choose green portions, amber ones only occasionally and red ones not at all. During reintroduction, amber and red foods gradually come back.
Which languages is the app available in?
The app is available in seven languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian and Japanese. There is no Dutch version.
What does the app cost, and is there a free version?
The app is a one-off purchase. Monash quotes a price of about US$7.99. In the App Store it costs about CHF 7 in Switzerland and under 10 euros in the eurozone, and slightly less on Google Play. Your purchase is linked to your Apple or Google account. You can download the app on other devices with the same account without paying again, and through Family Sharing for family members too. If you switch from Android to iPhone or the other way round, however, you have to buy the app again.
There is no free version of the Monash app.

Our FODMAP list
For a first overview, our FODMAP list of more than 350 foods is free. It does not show exact portion sizes, though, so the Monash app remains the more reliable source.
If you try other free FODMAP apps, check where their data comes from. The Monash app is based on the university’s own laboratory measurements.
Using the app in everyday life
Look up unfamiliar foods right there in the shop and use the shopping list.
Check amounts rather than cutting foods out completely. A smaller portion often works.
Record your tests in the diary. Our test plan for phase 2 takes you through the process step by step.
