FODZYME FAQ: How It Works, How to Use It and the Right Dose

Updated October 2026
FODZYME is a powder containing digestive enzymes that you mix into your food just before eating. It breaks down certain FODMAPs directly in your food, before they reach the large intestine. Here you will find answers to the most common questions: what FODZYME works on and what it does not, how to dose it, what is in it, when it is better not to use it and what the studies show so far.
Key points
- FODZYME contains three enzymes: fructan hydrolase, alpha-galactosidase and lactase. They break down fructans, GOS and lactose directly in your food.
- FODZYME does not work on polyols such as sorbitol and mannitol, or on excess fructose.
- For each meal, you take one scoop (about 0.75 g) or one sachet (1 g), mixed in just before eating. Above 60 °C, the enzymes lose their effect.
- Do not use FODZYME during reintroduction, as it would skew your tests. It is not suitable if you have hereditary fructose intolerance.
- There is little evidence so far: one laboratory study and two surveys without a control group. A placebo-controlled study is still under way.
What is FODZYME?
FODZYME is a digestive enzyme powder made by the US company Kiwi Biosciences. In the US, it is sold as a dietary supplement. FODZYME is not a medicine and does not treat any disease, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
This is how FODZYME works:
Powder on your food. You mix FODZYME into your food just before eating or sprinkle it over the first few bites.
Enzymes break down FODMAPs. While still in the food and in the stomach, the enzymes split fructans, GOS and lactose into smaller sugar units.
The small intestine absorbs the sugars. It absorbs the FODMAPs themselves poorly, but their building blocks well. As a result, less reaches the large intestine for bacteria to ferment.
Less gas in the large intestine. Less fermentation means less gas. This is meant to prevent bloating and abdominal pain. FODZYME does not help with symptoms you already have.
Our article What are FODMAPs? explains what FODMAPs are and why they cause symptoms in a sensitive gut.
Which FODMAPs does FODZYME work on?
FODZYME covers three of the six FODMAP groups. It contains a separate enzyme for each one:
Sources include wheat, rye, barley, onions, garlic, leeks and artichokes.
Sources include beans, lentils, chickpeas, cashews and pistachios.
Sources include milk, yoghurt, ice cream, cream cheese and ricotta.
Our FODMAP list shows how many FODMAPs individual foods contain.
FODZYME is most useful if you know from reintroduction that one of these three groups gives you trouble. It is handy in restaurants or when you eat at friends’ houses, for example, where onions and garlic are often hidden in sauces and stock. Monash University considers enzymes that target GOS particularly useful for vegetarians who eat a lot of pulses. When several FODMAP sources come together in one meal, FODZYME can cushion the effect, but it does not do away with your personal limit entirely. Read more in our article on FODMAP stacking.
What does FODZYME not work on?
FODZYME does not cover three of the six FODMAP groups: fructose, sorbitol and mannitol. It does not help with:
No effect
- polyols such as sorbitol and mannitol, for example in apples, cherries, mushrooms, cauliflower and sugar-free chewing gum
- excess fructose, for example in honey, mango, agave syrup and fructose syrup
- gluten: in wheat, rye and barley, FODZYME only breaks down the fructans, not the gluten
- symptoms caused by fatty, spicy or acidic food, stress or other factors
What about the fructose from fructans? Fructans are chains of fructose. When FODZYME breaks them down, some fructose is released. The manufacturer says these amounts are small, and most people tolerate much more fructose than fructans. In the laboratory study, around 70 per cent of this fructose was absorbed in the simulated small intestine. However, FODZYME is not suitable if you have hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare condition. See When to avoid it for more.
If you only react to fructose or polyols, FODZYME will not help you. In that case, adjust your portions of these foods instead. The Monash FODMAP app shows which amounts are usually fine.
FODZYME dosage and how to use it
The enzymes only work if they come into direct contact with the FODMAPs in your food. So rather than taking FODZYME on its own before a meal, add it to your food.
How to dose FODZYME
- One dose per meal: one scoop from the Home Kit (about 0.75 g, roughly ¼ teaspoon) or one sachet from the On-the-go Kit (1 g).
- Just before eating: mix it in or sprinkle it over the first few bites and chew well. Only add it to the portion you are about to eat.
- No hotter than 60 °C: do not cook or bake with it. Let steaming food cool for a minute or two. If it is too hot for you to eat, it is too hot for the enzymes.
- Large meals: 1.5 to 2 doses for large portions, very high FODMAP food or several triggers. For a small snack, half a dose may be enough.
- Long meals: if the meal lasts longer than 30 minutes, dose each course separately.
FODZYME also works in milk, milky coffee, smoothies or protein shakes. Add the dose to the drink, stir well and drink it straight away. If you have several drinks, each one needs its own dose.
Do not stir FODZYME into plain water. There it has no contact with the FODMAPs in your food, and the enzymes work less well. Drinking water with your meal, on the other hand, is no problem.
You can pre-treat soups, sauces, dips such as hummus or smoothies: mix in a dose and leave them in the fridge for up to 24 hours. You can also leave them for 2 to 3 hours at room temperature, but the fridge is safer for hummus and other perishable foods. You can then warm them up gently. Bread, pizza or crackers are not suitable for this.
If you remember within the first 30 minutes of the meal, FODZYME can still work. After that, it will do little for that meal.
How much FODZYME for onions, garlic or lentils?
There are no fixed amounts for individual foods, because the FODMAP content of meals and personal tolerance vary widely. As a guide: one dose breaks down up to 3 g of fructans, about as much as six cloves of garlic contain. This figure comes from a laboratory model, not from measurements in humans.
Start small: take one dose with a small portion of a food you know you react to. Good options include a handful of fried onions with rice or a slice of wheat bread with butter. If you get symptoms afterwards, use more powder or a smaller portion next time. Do not start with a dish that has lots of ingredients, or you will not know what is causing your symptoms.
When not to use FODZYME
In these situations, FODZYME is either unsuitable or only suitable with restrictions:
With this rare inherited metabolic disorder, fructose must be strictly avoided. FODZYME releases fructose when it breaks down fructans. Do not confuse this with the much more common fructose malabsorption.
FODZYME does not break down gluten. If you have coeliac disease, you still need a strict gluten-free diet. Read more in our article FODMAP vs gluten.
Enzymes change the FODMAP content of a meal. So test the FODMAP groups without FODZYME, otherwise you will not know how your body reacts on its own. Our reintroduction test plan shows you how.
Lactase and alpha-galactosidase release galactose, which people with this rare inherited disorder cannot break down properly.
FODZYME contains dextrin made from corn.
Blood in your stool, unintentional weight loss or a fever are not typical of IBS and can have another cause, which FODZYME does not help with. Read more in our IBS guide.
Is FODZYME safe? Side effects and interactions
According to the manufacturer, most people tolerate FODZYME well. The enzymes only act on the food and are then digested like other proteins. The manufacturer states that all ingredients are generally recognised as safe (GRAS) in the US. It has every batch tested externally for enzyme activity, microbial contamination, heavy metals, mould toxins and allergens.
Allergic reactions are rare but possible, the manufacturer says. If you notice tingling in your mouth, facial swelling or a severe rash, the manufacturer advises stopping FODZYME immediately and not using it again. Shortness of breath is a medical emergency (emergency number 144 in Switzerland, 112 in the EU). Some people get symptoms at first when they eat foods they have avoided for a long time. According to the manufacturer, this is because the body is adjusting, and smaller portions help.
According to the manufacturer, there are no known interactions with common medicines, because FODZYME works in the food. The manufacturer lists these points:
Alpha-galactosidase can slightly weaken the effect of these diabetes medicines. The manufacturer therefore advises monitoring your blood sugar.
The broken-down FODMAPs are absorbed as sugars and can slightly affect your blood sugar. A dose of FODZYME itself contains less than 1 g of carbohydrate.
Do not take enzymes that break down protein (proteases) in powder form at the same time as FODZYME. In capsule form, they are not a problem, according to the manufacturer.
According to the manufacturer, FODZYME is compatible with prescribed pancreatic enzymes such as Creon and with acid blockers such as proton pump inhibitors.
FODZYME ingredients and allergens
FODZYME contains only the enzyme blend and dextrin as a stabiliser:
The FODMAP certification only confirms that the powder itself is low in FODMAPs. It says nothing about how well it works.
Studies and user experiences: what is the evidence?
So far, there is one laboratory study on FODZYME and two surveys of users. The manufacturer funded or co-authored all three. Whether FODZYME works better than a placebo is only now being tested in an ongoing study.
In the SHIME gut model, FODZYME broke down around 90 per cent of 3 g of inulin, a fructan, within 30 minutes. This test used 1.125 g of powder. With 0.75 g, the figure was around 77 per cent. Less gas was produced in the simulated large intestine. Only inulin was tested, not whole meals.
A total of 118 people with IBS or suspected IBS filled in a questionnaire before and after 4 weeks of taking FODZYME. Of these, 78 per cent reported less bloating and wind, and 65 per cent less abdominal pain. Only 118 of the 1,075 people who filled in the first questionnaire were included in the analysis.
In this study, 442 people with IBS, some of them self-diagnosed, used FODZYME for 4 weeks. Their IBS-SSS symptom score fell on average from 270 to 167 out of 500 points, and by at least 50 points in 69 per cent of them. So far, only an abstract from the American College of Gastroenterology conference is available.
Since May 2026, a randomised, double-blind study has been comparing FODZYME with a placebo in around 150 adults with bloating. No results have been published yet (as of October 2026).
There are also independent studies on two of the three enzymes. In lactose intolerance, lactase makes dairy products easier to tolerate. Monash University tested alpha-galactosidase in a placebo-controlled study of 31 people with IBS. In those who reacted to GOS, the full dose eased symptoms, but the half dose did not. The product page does not say how much enzyme activity a dose of FODZYME provides. So these results cannot be applied to it directly.
In context: Laboratory tests have shown that the enzymes break down fructans. Whether FODZYME reliably relieves symptoms in everyday life is still an open question. In surveys without a control group, expectations and natural ups and downs in symptoms can strongly influence the results. So try FODZYME with specific meals and see whether it helps you.
How much does FODZYME cost, and where can you buy it?
FODZYME comes in two packs containing the same enzyme blend. The difference is the amount per serving: a sachet from the On-the-go Kit contains 1 g instead of about 0.75 g, so roughly a third more. This is intended for eating out, when portions are bigger and contain more hidden FODMAPs.
| Pack | Price | Per serving |
|---|---|---|
| Home Kit Jar, 60 servings of about 0.75 g | CHF 99.95 | CHF 1.67 |
| On-the-go Kit 30 sachets of 1 g | CHF 99.95 | CHF 3.33 |
Prices at FODCORNER as of October 2026. Price per serving rounded.
So per serving, the Home Kit costs half as much, and per gram of powder about a third less. If you take one dose a day, a jar lasts two months. The sachets are handy when you are out and about, because you do not need to measure anything.
FODCORNER is one of the official FODZYME retailers in Switzerland and also delivers to the EU. Only buy FODZYME from authorised retailers, because products from other sources may be counterfeit, out of date or stored incorrectly.
More questions about FODZYME
How quickly does FODZYME work?
The enzymes start working as soon as they touch the food. However, you will only notice the difference 4 to 8 hours after eating, because that is when FODMAPs reach the large intestine, where they would otherwise cause symptoms. So judge FODZYME over several meals, ideally over 5 to 7 days.
Can I take FODZYME as a capsule or before eating?
No. The enzymes need direct contact with the FODMAPs in your food. That is why FODZYME comes as a powder that you mix into your food or sprinkle over the first few bites.
Can I take FODZYME every day?
Yes, according to the manufacturer, even in the long term, and the effect does not wear off over time. Bear in mind, though, that fructans and GOS feed beneficial gut bacteria. In the laboratory study, FODZYME reduced the production of short-chain fatty acids by around 19 per cent. There are no long-term data in humans on this yet, so FODZYME makes most sense for meals you would otherwise not tolerate well.
Can I take FODZYME during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
FODZYME has not been specifically studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding. According to the manufacturer, nothing in its ingredients or the way it works points to any risk.
Is FODZYME suitable for children?
The manufacturer gives no age limit and no separate dose for children. It says the dose does not depend on age or weight, but on the size and FODMAP content of the meal.
How should I store FODZYME, and how long does it keep?
Store FODZYME in a dry place, tightly closed and below 25 °C. In warm, humid conditions, you can keep it in the fridge. The best-before date is on the bottom of the jar for the Home Kit and on the tab of each sachet for the On-the-go Kit. After that date, the enzymes slowly lose their effect.
Does FODZYME change the taste or nutritional value?
The powder has no taste and does not change the texture. The nutritional value hardly changes either, because FODMAPs only make up a small part of a meal. One dose contains less than 1 g of carbohydrate.
Does FODZYME replace the FODMAP diet?
No. The FODMAP diet helps you find out which FODMAPs cause your symptoms, and FODZYME only covers three groups. Monash University mainly sees enzymes such as lactase and alpha-galactosidase as an add-on after reintroduction. Our article What are FODMAPs? explains how the diet works.
